Delhi NCR or Chennai for treatment: how to choose
Delhi NCR or Chennai for treatment? Choose the specialist first, then compare visas, accredited hospitals, air quality, monsoon rain and family logistics.
Choosing a city · 5 November 2026
Neither city is right for every patient. Choose the specialist and hospital first, and let the city follow. Then compare the two on what differs: travel from your home, the weather in your treatment months, air quality in Delhi NCR, rain in Chennai, and how your family will manage there.
What should decide the choice first?
The patient’s condition should. Send your reports for a review and ask which specialist would treat the case. A city is a place to receive care. It is not a treatment plan. A review of reports from abroad is an early opinion. The treating specialist decides what is needed and whether travel is suitable.
If you receive opinions from both cities, compare them on the same questions. What is the proposed plan? What must be tested on arrival? How long is the hospital stay, and how long must the patient remain nearby after discharge?
Does the visa differ between Delhi and Chennai?
We found no difference by city on the official e-Visa portal. Its list of designated airports names both Delhi and Chennai. You may apply for the e-Medical visa at least 4 days before arrival, within a window of 120 days. Up to two e-Medical Attendant visas are granted against one e-Medical visa.
The portal also asks for a letter from the hospital in India, on its letterhead, with the date or tentative date of admission. So the choice of hospital comes before the visa. Settle it first. Rules change, so check the portal on the day you apply.
How do we check hospitals in each city?
Start with NABH, India’s national accreditation board for hospitals. Its directory can be filtered by state and city. NABH notes that data migration is ongoing, so some information may be incomplete for a while. Ask each hospital for its current certificate as well.
A hospital described as being in Delhi NCR may not be listed under Delhi. Search by the state and city on the hospital’s own address. If a hospital states that it holds JCI accreditation, ask for the current certificate and confirm it with JCI.
Accreditation tells you about systems and safety standards. It does not tell you which specialist is right for your case.
What should we know about air quality in Delhi NCR?
A Government of India review of Delhi’s air quality says that October to February sees episodic events such as extensive farm burning. In 2022, Delhi’s monthly average AQI was above 300 in both November and December. That falls in the ‘Very Poor’ band of 301 to 400. This is one year’s data, so check current readings.
If your dates fall in these months, raise it early. Tell the treating specialist about any lung or heart condition. Ask whether the season affects the timing of treatment or the place to stay after discharge.
What should we know about rain in Chennai?
The India Meteorological Department calls October to December the chief rainy season for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. In 2025 the northeast monsoon began on 16 October, against a normal date of 20 October. On 2 December 2025, the centre of Cyclone Ditwah was about 40 km from Chennai, and north Tamil Nadu had torrential rains.
If your dates fall in these months, allow spare days around flights and appointments. Ask the hospital what happens if a flight or a review is delayed by weather.
What should we ask about daily life in each city?
- Flights: which route from your home is simplest, and how will the patient manage it after discharge?
- Language: who will interpret at consultations, and is that person confirmed in writing?
- Stay: where can the family stay after discharge, and how far is it from the hospital?
- Food and faith: what is available in the hospital and nearby?
- Costs: can each hospital give a written estimate on the same basis, with inclusions and exclusions?
- Follow-up: how will reviews work once you are home?
What if both cities still look suitable?
Then choose the plan you understand most clearly. Look for the hospital that answers your questions in writing, names who will coordinate your care and explains the follow-up. Weigh the dates against the season in each city. Do not book flights until the admission date is confirmed in writing.
