Panchakarma: the five purification procedures of Ayurveda

Panchakarma is Ayurveda’s set of five purification procedures, prepared for with oil and heat therapies. What each involves and what to ask before booking.

Panchakarma (also: Panchakarma therapy, Panchkarma): Panchakarma is a group of five Ayurvedic purification procedures, preceded by oleation and sudation, carried out under the supervision of qualified Ayurveda physicians.

Panchakarma means five actions. It is Ayurveda’s set of purification procedures. The Ministry of Ayush’s Ayusoft resource lists them as Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana. Each is preceded by preparatory oil and heat therapies. Panchakarma is a supervised programme run by qualified Ayurveda physicians, not a spa treatment.

What are the five procedures?

  • Vamana: medicine-induced vomiting, used mainly for aggravated Kapha.
  • Virechana: medicine-induced purgation, used mainly for Pitta.
  • Basti: medicated enema for conditions linked to Vata. The National Institute of Ayurveda lists two forms, Niruha and Anuvasana.
  • Nasya: medicated oil, powder or juice given through the nose.
  • Raktamokshana: bloodletting, described for conditions linked to impure blood.

How is a Panchakarma programme structured?

Ayusoft explains that each procedure has three stages. There is a preparatory stage (Purvakarma), the main procedure (Pradhanakarma) and an after-care stage (Paschatkarma). Oleation with oils and sudation, a sweating therapy, are the main preparatory steps. Not every person receives all five procedures. The physician chooses which are suitable.

What should you ask before booking?

  • Is the centre registered with a government authority, and is it NABH-accredited?
  • Who is the supervising physician, and how are they registered?
  • Which procedures do you propose for me, and why?
  • How do you check my current medicines and medical conditions first?
  • What diet and activity rules apply during the programme?

Purgation, induced vomiting and enemas can be demanding. Tell the physician about heart, kidney or bowel conditions, pregnancy and every medicine you take. Ask your own doctor before you go if you have a chronic illness.

Supportive, not curative

IndiaMedica presents Panchakarma as supportive wellness care only. It does not replace treatment from your medical doctors.

Questions people ask

Is Panchakarma the same as an oil massage?

No. Massage with oil (oleation) is one preparatory step. Panchakarma proper means the five purification procedures under medical supervision. Spa menus sometimes use the word loosely, so ask exactly which procedures are included.

Which visa do I need for a Panchakarma programme?

If treatment under Ayush systems is the sole purpose of your trip, the Ayush visa is designed for this. PIB says treatment should be at a centre accredited and registered with a government authority. Confirm current rules on the official visa portal.
