Case manager: the person who coordinates your treatment trip

What a case manager does for an international patient in India, how it differs from your doctor’s role and what to expect from IndiaMedica’s case managers.

Case manager (also: Patient coordinator, Patient navigator, Care coordinator): A case manager is a non-clinical coordinator who guides a patient through the practical steps of treatment, from sharing reports to follow-up after returning home.

A case manager is your single point of contact for the practical side of treatment abroad. The role is close to what the US National Cancer Institute calls a patient navigator: someone who helps guide a patient through the health care system. A case manager does not diagnose or treat. Your treating specialist makes every medical decision.

What does a case manager do?

  • Collects your reports and sends them, with your consent, to hospitals for review.
  • Explains each hospital’s reply in plain words and lists questions to ask.
  • Helps you get the hospital letter needed for the visa.
  • Coordinates dates, airport pickup, interpreters and accommodation.
  • Stays in touch during the stay and after you return home.

What a case manager should not do

A case manager should not give medical advice, promise results or push you towards a hospital. NCI notes that navigators help patients communicate with their providers so they can get the information they need. That is the right boundary.

Why it matters abroad

The US CDC advises patients travelling for care to understand which services are included in the cost, to plan follow-up care and to get copies of their records. A case manager helps with each of these practical steps.

At IndiaMedica

Your case manager is your contact from the free case review to follow-up at home. Partner hospitals pay us a disclosed referral fee. It never changes your price.

Questions people ask

Is a case manager the same as the hospital’s international desk?

No. The hospital’s international patient department works for that hospital. An independent case manager works across hospitals and helps you compare. Both can be useful, and they usually work together once you choose a hospital.

Will my case manager speak my language?

Ask before you start. A case manager may not speak every language, so services often bring in interpreters instead. What matters most is that medical conversations, consent and discharge happen through a qualified interpreter when you need one.
