Day-care procedure: treatment with same-day discharge

A day-care procedure lets you go home the same day. Which treatments may qualify, how the day works and what an international patient should plan for.

Day-care procedure (also: Day surgery, Same-day surgery, Day case): A day-care procedure is a planned treatment or operation after which the patient is discharged on the same day without an overnight hospital stay.

A day-care procedure is planned treatment after which you leave hospital the same day. MedlinePlus notes that minor surgery usually means going home the same day. Some eye procedures and other minor operations can be done this way, depending on the patient. Your specialist decides whether it is suitable for you after reviewing your health.

How does the day usually run?

  • Arrive at the time given, which may be early in the morning.
  • Follow the fasting instructions exactly.
  • Bring medicines in original packs, reports and any equipment you use daily.
  • Have the procedure and recover until the team is satisfied.
  • Leave with written instructions and a responsible adult.

MedlinePlus states that you cannot drive yourself home after surgery and should limit activity to indoors for at least 24 hours.

What should a medical traveller plan?

Same-day discharge does not mean same-day flight. You return to your accommodation and come back for review as the team advises. The UK CAA’s general guidance gives 24 hours after simple cataract or corneal laser surgery and longer for other procedures. Your surgeon decides when you can fly.

Is an attendant needed?

Yes, someone should take you back to your accommodation and stay with you. For e-Visa travellers, that person needs an e-Medical Attendant visa.

Ask about the back-up plan

Questions people ask

Which procedures are done as day care?

It varies by hospital and by patient. Ask the specialist whether your procedure is usually done as day care and whether your health might mean an overnight stay instead. Your other conditions and medicines can change the plan.

Do I still need pre-operative tests?

Often yes. MedlinePlus lists blood tests, an ECG and sometimes a chest X-ray as common checks before surgery, depending on age, health and the type of procedure. Ask what is needed in advance.
