A cataract surgery trip to India moves through clear stages: a remote review of your eye reports, travel, an in-person eye assessment with measurements, surgery, aftercare checks and follow-up at home. The NHS describes cataract surgery as replacing the cloudy lens with an artificial one, usually under local anaesthetic. Your eye surgeon decides each step and when you can fly.

What is cataract surgery?
The NHS describes it as an operation to replace a cloudy lens in your eye with an artificial lens. MedlinePlus notes that adults are usually awake under local anaesthesia, given as drops or an injection. Children usually receive general anaesthesia.
Why is an in-person assessment needed?
Before surgery a specialist examines and measures your eye. MedlinePlus explains that ultrasound or a laser scanning device is used to measure the eye. This helps choose the right intraocular lens. If you wear contact lenses, the NHS says you may need to stop wearing them for a few days beforehand. Ask the hospital what applies to you.
What happens after surgery?
The NHS says most people go home the same day. You should not drive yourself. You will be given eye drops to help healing and prevent infection, and may need a shield at night. Avoid swimming, heavy lifting and eye make-up until your surgeon advises otherwise.
Two eyes means two operations
The NHS states that if both eyes have cataracts they are treated on separate days. Ask your surgeon how this affects your plans and your length of stay.
When can you fly home?
Only your surgeon can say. They will check your eye before advising on travel. Bring the discharge summary home for your local eye doctor.
Questions people ask
Do I need someone with me for cataract surgery in India?
It helps. You should not drive after surgery, and your vision may be blurred at first. An attendant can help with eye drops, travel and appointments. Up to two attendants can apply for e-Medical Attendant visas.
Which reports should I send for a cataract opinion?
Start with your latest eye examination, your glasses prescription and any eye scans. Your case manager will confirm what the surgeon needs. The final lens measurements are usually taken in person at the hospital before surgery.
