Outpatient care: consultations and treatment without admission

Outpatient care covers consultations, tests and treatments without an overnight stay. How OPD visits fit into a treatment trip to India and what to bring.

Outpatient care (also: OPD, Outpatient department, Day patient): Outpatient care is diagnosis or treatment at a health facility without staying overnight; the patient goes home or to their accommodation the same day.

Outpatient care is any visit for diagnosis or treatment where you do not stay overnight. The US National Cancer Institute defines an outpatient as a patient who visits a facility without spending the night, sometimes called a day patient. In India the outpatient department is often called the OPD. Consultations, scans, blood tests and follow-up checks are usually outpatient care.

What happens in outpatient visits on a treatment trip?

  • The first consultation with the specialist after you arrive.
  • Tests the specialist orders, such as blood tests, ECG, echocardiogram or scans.
  • Review of results and agreement on a plan.
  • Some treatments, such as many chemotherapy sessions or radiotherapy.
  • Check-ups after discharge, before you fly home.

Can I be treated for an illness as an outpatient on any visa?

Indian missions explain that foreigners on longer visas who need only outpatient consultation for a minor condition do not need to convert their visa to a medical visa. Planned treatment trips should still use a medical or e-Medical visa.

What should I bring to each visit?

  • Your passport and hospital registration card.
  • All previous reports, in order, and a list of medicines.
  • A notebook or phone to record advice.
  • Your attendant or interpreter, if needed.

Plan your days

Outpatient days can involve waiting between tests. Ask the international desk for a schedule and whether tests can be grouped on the same day.

Questions people ask

Is an outpatient consultation needed before admission?

Usually yes. Even after a remote review, the specialist will want to examine you and may order fresh tests in India before confirming the plan. Allow time for this before your planned procedure date.

Do outpatient visits need payment each time?

Billing practices differ between hospitals. Outpatient consultations and tests may be billed separately from an inpatient estimate or package. Ask whether pre-admission tests and follow-up visits are included in your quote.
