Teleconsultation: speaking to an Indian specialist before you travel

How a teleconsultation with an Indian specialist works, what it can and cannot settle before travel and how to prepare your reports and questions.

Teleconsultation (also: Video consultation, Telemedicine consultation, Virtual visit): A teleconsultation is a consultation with a health professional by video or phone instead of in person.

A teleconsultation is a consultation with a doctor by video or phone. MedlinePlus describes a virtual visit as care through a phone call or video chat. For international patients it is a useful step after a report review and before booking flights. It lets you meet the specialist and ask questions. It cannot replace the examination and tests done in person.

What can a teleconsultation help with?

  • Understanding the specialist’s reading of your reports.
  • Hearing the likely treatment options and what tests are needed in India.
  • Asking about the hospital stay, attendants and follow-up.
  • Judging whether you are comfortable with the doctor’s communication style.

What are the limits?

MedlinePlus notes that a provider may not be able to make the right diagnosis without examining you in person. A specialist who is not your regular doctor may not have your full history. Technical problems can also disrupt a call.

How should I prepare?

  • Send complete reports and DICOM imaging in advance.
  • Write your questions down and rank them.
  • Have your medicines list ready.
  • Test your camera, microphone and connection.
  • Ask an interpreter or family member to join if needed.

Written follow-up

Ask the hospital to confirm the key points of the call in writing, including the proposed plan and any tests needed on arrival.

Questions people ask

Can an Indian doctor prescribe medicine in a teleconsultation?

Prescribing across borders depends on the laws of both countries. Treat a teleconsultation as advice to discuss with your own doctor. Your doctor at home should prescribe anything you need before travel.

Do hospitals charge for teleconsultations?

Hospitals set their own policies. A call may be offered without charge after a report review, or a consultation fee may apply. Ask before booking and get any fee confirmed in writing, along with the length of the call.
