Indian Medical Register (also: IMR): The Indian Medical Register is the National Medical Commission’s searchable online record of doctors registered with State Medical Councils across India.
The Indian Medical Register is the National Medical Commission’s online listing of doctors registered with the State Medical Councils across India. You can search it by name, registration number, year of registration or state council. It is a quick way to confirm that a doctor named by a hospital is registered to practise medicine in India.
What does the register show?
The NMC says this section publishes doctors registered with the various State Medical Councils across India. Each entry can be opened to view registration details. The NMC notes that the data is still being updated. The page also links to a list of blacklisted doctors.
How do you search it?
- Ask the hospital for the doctor’s full name, registration number, state council and year of registration.
- Open the Indian Medical Register on the NMC website.
- Search by registration number and council first, as names can be spelled in different ways.
- Open the entry and compare the name, qualifications and council with what you were told.
- Keep a screenshot for your records.
What can the register not tell you?
Registration confirms that a doctor is legally registered to practise. It does not show how often a doctor performs a particular procedure or what their outcomes are. Ask the hospital directly about the surgeon’s experience with your operation.
What if the details do not match?
Small differences in spelling are common. A different council, an unfamiliar qualification or no record at all should prompt questions. Ask the hospital for the registration certificate and check it with the relevant State Medical Council before you commit.
Questions people ask
Is a doctor not on the register allowed to treat me?
The register exists so that patients can confirm a doctor’s registration. If you cannot find a doctor, ask the hospital to show the registration certificate and check it with the State Medical Council before you agree to treatment.
Does the register cover Ayurveda practitioners?
The Indian Medical Register covers doctors registered through the State Medical Councils. Practitioners of Indian systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda, are regulated through the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine.
