Who registers doctors in India?
The National Medical Commission is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, established under the NMC Act 2019. Its website hosts the Indian Medical Register and links to the State Medical Councils that register doctors in each state. It also runs a separate National Medical Register portal for registration.
How do you search the register?
The Indian Medical Register page offers searches by doctor name, year of registration, registration number and State Medical Council. The page asks users to enter or select name, qualification, registration year, registration number and registered council. A matching record opens in a detail view that can be printed.
What if the doctor does not appear?
- Check the spelling and try the name in different orders.
- Search by registration number instead of name.
- Try the State Medical Council the doctor named.
- Note that the NMC page states its data is being updated, so recent changes may lag.
- Ask the hospital to confirm the registration in writing.
What else should you check?
Registration shows a doctor is licensed to practise. It does not tell you about experience with your condition. Ask the hospital how many procedures like yours the team performs and who will be present. Check the hospital’s accreditation too. IndiaMedica does not recommend individual doctors. Your case manager can request a specialist’s registration details for you.
Keep a copy
Print or save the register entry with the date you checked it. Add it to your treatment file.
Questions people ask
Does the register show a doctor’s speciality?
The search form includes qualification among the details. A specialist qualification may appear in the record, but the register is not a full profile. Ask the hospital for the doctor’s qualifications and training in writing as well.
Is a foreign-trained doctor in India on the same register?
Ask any doctor who will treat you in India for their Indian registration number and the council that issued it, wherever they trained. Then check it on the Indian Medical Register in the same way. If you cannot find a record, ask the hospital to explain.
