NABH accreditation: what it means for international patients

What NABH accreditation is, who runs it, how to check a hospital on the NABH directory and what the badge does and does not tell an overseas patient.

NABH accreditation (also: National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers): NABH accreditation is India’s national quality accreditation for hospitals and other healthcare providers, granted by a constituent board of the Quality Council of India.

NABH accreditation means a hospital has been assessed against national standards set by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers. NABH is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India and has worked since 2005. For an international patient it is a useful first filter. It is not a promise about any single doctor or result.

Who runs NABH and what does it accredit?

NABH describes itself as a constituent board of the Quality Council of India. Its programmes cover hospitals, clinics, laboratories, AYUSH institutions, emergency departments and digital health platforms. It runs more than 30 accreditation, certification and empanelment programmes.

NABH’s hospital standards are themselves accredited by ISQua, the International Society for Quality in Health Care. A May 2026 government release states that NABH has accredited over 1,299 hospitals.

How do I check whether a hospital is NABH accredited?

  • Use the NABH ‘Find an Accredited Healthcare Organisation’ directory at nabh.co and search by state, city and specialty.
  • Note that the directory also lists certified and empanelled facilities. Ask the hospital which programme it holds.
  • Check the date. NABH says accreditation is valid for a defined period with a surveillance visit in the second year.
  • Keep a screenshot with the date you checked.

What does the badge not tell you?

Accreditation looks at systems such as patient safety, infection control and patients’ rights. It does not rank surgeons or predict an outcome. Your treating specialist still decides whether a procedure suits you.

How IndiaMedica uses it

We record the NABH status and the date we checked it for every hospital we suggest. A badge older than our review window is not shown.

Questions people ask

Is NABH the same as JCI?

No. NABH is India’s national accreditation body under the Quality Council of India. JCI is an international accreditor based in the United States. Some Indian hospitals hold both. Each uses its own standards and survey process, so check each status separately on the official source.

Does an entry-level certificate count as NABH accreditation?

NABH lists an Entry Level Hospitals Certification Programme separately from its full Hospitals Accreditation Programme. Ask the hospital which one it holds and confirm it on the NABH directory. The two are not interchangeable labels.
