Glossary term · Treatment
LASIK (also: Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, Laser eye surgery): LASIK is refractive surgery that uses lasers to create a corneal flap and reshape the underlying cornea to correct short-sight, long-sight or astigmatism.
LASIK is laser eye surgery that permanently reshapes the cornea, the clear front layer of the eye, to improve focus and reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. MedlinePlus explains that the surgeon creates a thin hinged flap, usually with a femtosecond laser, then uses an excimer laser to reshape the tissue underneath before replacing the flap.
Who may be a candidate?
MedlinePlus says LASIK is most often used for short-sightedness and sometimes for long-sightedness or astigmatism. Generally you should be at least 18, or 21 for some lasers. You need healthy eyes, a stable prescription within the correctable range and a cornea thick enough for surgery. Pre-operative testing confirms this.
It says pregnant or breastfeeding people should not have LASIK. Some medicines and conditions, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or glaucoma, may affect eligibility. The surgeon decides after testing.
What are the risks?
- Dry eyes and scratchiness.
- Glare, halos, light sensitivity and difficulty driving at night.
- Reduced contrast sensitivity.
- Corneal infection or scarring.
- Rarely, reduced vision or permanent vision loss.
MedlinePlus notes some people need a second procedure for over- or under-correction. Most people will still need reading glasses from middle age.
How should you plan travel around LASIK?
MedlinePlus describes a follow-up check 24 to 48 hours after surgery and advises avoiding swimming, hot tubs, contact sports and eye make-up for some weeks. Ask how long to stop wearing contact lenses before the assessment, because lenses can change the cornea’s shape. Plan to stay until the first follow-up. Arrange an optometrist at home for later checks.
Questions people ask
Can LASIK be done on both eyes in one day?
MedlinePlus says both eyes can be treated in one session. Each eye takes about 10 to 15 minutes, using numbing drops only. Your surgeon will confirm whether this suits you.
What if my eyes are not suitable for LASIK?
Testing may show your cornea is too thin or your prescription is outside the range. Other refractive options may exist. The eye surgeon will explain what is possible after measuring your eyes.
