Treatment package: what a hospital package price includes

How hospital treatment packages work in India, the usual inclusions and exclusions, and the questions that protect you from unexpected charges.

Treatment package (also: Package price, Surgical package, All-inclusive package): A treatment package is a fixed hospital price for a defined procedure and length of stay, with listed inclusions and exclusions.

A treatment package is a single price a hospital offers for a defined procedure, room type and number of days. Packages make budgeting simpler. They also come with conditions. The US CDC warns that some overseas providers charge substantial fees for follow-up care on top of the base cost, so read what the package leaves out as carefully as what it includes.

What does a package usually include?

  • A stated number of days in a named room category.
  • Surgeon, anaesthesia and operating theatre charges.
  • Standard medicines and consumables during the stay.
  • Routine tests during admission.
  • A named implant or device type, where relevant.

What usually costs extra?

  • Days beyond the package limit.
  • A higher room category.
  • Complications and extra procedures.
  • Tests done before admission.
  • Outpatient follow-up and medicines at discharge.
  • Services for the attendant.

Package or itemised estimate?

A package can suit a procedure where the stay is predictable. Where the course of care is harder to predict, a hospital may prefer an itemised estimate. Ask the hospital why it has chosen one approach for your case.

Get it in writing

Ask for the package terms on hospital letterhead, with inclusions, exclusions and the rate for extra days. Keep it with your estimate.

Questions people ask

Can the package change after I arrive?

Yes, if tests in India show something new or the treating specialist changes the plan. Ask the hospital how it will tell you and get your agreement before any change in price.

Are packages negotiable?

You can always ask the hospital whether a package can be adjusted, for example for room category. IndiaMedica does not trade a lower price for a higher fee to us. Our referral fee never changes your price.
