Many dental implant plans need two visits because the jaw bone must heal between stages. On the first visit the dentist assesses you and places the implant. You then go home to heal. On the second visit the crown, bridge or denture is fitted. Your dentist decides whether one visit or two suits your bone and the implant system used.

Why do dental implants often need two visits?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed into the jaw bone. It supports a crown, bridge or denture. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust describes treatment in stages: an assessment, bone grafting for some people, placing the implant, then fitting the crown, bridge or denture. Each stage may involve several appointments.
The gap between placement and the final tooth is for healing. The implant has to join the bone before it can carry a crown. That is why many international patients plan one trip for placement and a second trip for the restoration. Some cases can be done in one trip. That depends on your bone and the system your dentist uses.
What happens on each visit?
The first visit covers the examination, any scans the clinic still needs and the surgery itself. Bring your X-rays and a list of medicines. Blood thinners and diabetes matter to the plan. The second visit is shorter in most plans. The dentist checks the implant, takes impressions if needed and fits the final restoration.
What should you do between visits?
- Follow the written aftercare given by the clinic.
- Avoid smoking: the NHS trust notes smokers have a higher risk the implant does not join the bone.
- Keep your local dentist informed so they can check healing.
- Send photos or X-rays to the Indian clinic if they ask for them.
- Confirm the date of visit two only when the dentist agrees the bone is ready.
Who decides the timing
Only your implant dentist can say how long healing takes in your case and when the second visit should be. IndiaMedica helps with the travel around their plan.
Questions people ask
Can I have the whole implant done in one trip?
Sometimes. It depends on the quality of your bone and the implant system the dentist chooses. Many cases still need two visits so the bone can heal between stages. Ask the clinic to explain in writing which approach they suggest for you and why.
Who looks after the implant once I am home?
Your local dentist usually takes over routine checks and cleaning. The NHS trust notes that you are responsible for the long-term care of implants. Take copies of all records and the implant details home so your dentist knows exactly what was placed.
