Do you need to register with the FRRO?

When foreign patients and attendants may need to register with the FRRO in India, what changed in the 2026 rules and how e-FRRO works.

Many short medical trips never need FRRO registration, but longer stays can. Whether you must register depends on your visa type, its validity and how long you stay. India’s registration rules were amended in 2026. Confirm your position with the FRRO through the online e-FRRO system.

What is the FRRO?

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office handles registration and visa-related services for foreign nationals in India. The Bureau of Immigration’s e-FRRO system lets foreigners apply online. It describes the aim as faceless, cashless and paperless services and advises applying at least two weeks in advance.

Who has needed to register?

An FRRO registration brochure on the Bureau of Immigration site lists medical and medical attendant visas among the categories that had to register within 14 days of first arrival when the visa was valid for more than 180 days. The official e-Visa portal does not list a registration step for e-Medical visas. It states that e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible.

What changed recently?

Registration now sits under India’s Immigration and Foreigners framework. All India Radio News reported in June 2026 that the Immigration and Foreigners (Amendment) Rules 2026 require foreigners arriving for up to 180 days to register before their visa expires if they need to stay on. Late registration is permitted only in emergent circumstances.

What should a patient do?

  • Ask the hospital for a realistic estimate of your stay in India.
  • Check your visa conditions the day it is issued.
  • Confirm with the FRRO through e-FRRO if treatment may run long.
  • Ask the hospital for a letter stating the period of treatment if you need to apply.
  • Keep every approval with your passport.

Do not rely on old advice

Registration rules have changed more than once. Always confirm the current requirement with the FRRO or Bureau of Immigration before your visa period ends.

Questions people ask

Can I extend an e-Medical visa if treatment takes longer?

The e-Visa portal states that e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. If treatment may run longer than your visa allows, ask the hospital and the FRRO early about the regular Medical visa route or other options.

Does the attendant need to register too?

Attendants follow the rules for their own visa. If the patient needs to register or extend, the attendant very likely needs to as well. Check each person’s position separately on e-FRRO.
