India’s medical hubs at a glance

The Indian cities international patients most often consider for treatment, with JCI hospital counts from a government note and where to read more.

India’s large hospitals cluster in a handful of metropolitan areas: Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Kochi. A May 2026 government note lists JCI-accredited hospitals by city, with the most in Delhi and Mumbai. The right city depends on your treatment, the specialist team and practical needs such as travel and language, not on the city alone.

Where do the hospital counts come from?

The Press Information Bureau published a note on medical and wellness tourism in May 2026. It lists JCI-accredited hospitals by city as of 2022: Delhi nine, Mumbai six, Bangalore three, and two each in Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. Kolkata, Nagpur and Cochin have one each. These are older figures and JCI status changes, so treat them as a snapshot.

Does a city’s count tell you where to go?

No. A count shows only how many hospitals held one accreditation at one time. The same note reports over 1,299 NABH-accredited hospitals across India, spread far more widely. A city with fewer JCI hospitals may still have a strong team for your condition.

What else matters when choosing a city?

  • Which hospitals’ specialists recommend a plan you understand
  • Current accreditation, checked at source
  • Flight connections from your home city
  • Language support for you and your attendant
  • Accommodation near the hospital for follow-up visits

Accreditation is checked, not assumed

IndiaMedica shows each hospital badge with its source and check date. A badge older than twelve months stops showing until re-checked.

Questions people ask

Which Indian city has the most JCI-accredited hospitals?

In the Press Information Bureau’s May 2026 note, Delhi has the highest count with nine JCI hospitals, followed by Mumbai with six. These figures are dated 2022. Always check a hospital’s current status rather than relying on a city total.

Can I be treated in one city and recover in another?

Your treating specialist decides when you can leave the hospital’s area and how follow-up visits will work. Many patients stay near the hospital until the team is satisfied. Ask the team before booking any onward travel within India.
