Medical travel to India from Afghanistan: the Afghan visa portal

Afghan nationals are not on India’s standard e-Visa list. They apply online through a separate Afghan module, with passport and Tazkira uploads.

Afghan nationals are not on the standard Indian e-Visa eligible list. Instead the official visa portal directs them to a separate Afghan visa module. Applicants upload their passport and their national identity card (Tazkira). News reports in May 2025 said medical and medical attendant visas were among the categories India resumed for Afghans.

Can Afghan patients use the e-Medical visa?

Not through the standard e-Visa route. Afghanistan does not appear on the list of countries eligible for the Indian e-Visa. The portal carries a separate notice that Afghan nationals may apply online on the new Afghan portal. Use only the official Government of India visa website.

Which categories are open to Afghan nationals?

In May 2025 The Tribune reported that India had resumed visa services for Afghans. It reported that the categories included medical visas for patients and a separate category for medical attendants. Business, student and entry visas were also listed. Visa rules for Afghan nationals have changed several times in recent years. Check the portal on the day you apply.

What documents are needed?

  • A valid passport, uploaded with the application.
  • Your Tazkira. The Consulate General of India in Edinburgh describes the passport and Tazkira uploads as mandatory.
  • A recent front-facing photograph.
  • A letter from the Indian hospital that has accepted your case.
  • Medical reports and a summary from your doctor.

Were older visas cancelled?

Yes. Indian missions have announced that physical visas issued earlier to Afghan nationals who were not in India are no longer valid. If you hold an old visa, do not rely on it. Apply afresh through the portal.

Do Afghan nationals register after arrival?

Indian missions told holders of the e-Emergency X-Misc visa to register with the nearest FRRO or FRO within seven days of arrival. The Bureau of Immigration sets general FRRO rules for medical visa holders as well. Read the conditions printed on your visa and ask the hospital’s international desk to help you register on time.

Is language support available?

IndiaMedica’s Afghanistan guidance is in English. If you need a Dari or Pashto interpreter during consultations, tell us when you send your case. We will ask hospitals whether they can arrange one.

How does IndiaMedica help?

We review your reports free of charge and ask suitable hospitals for an opinion. The treating specialist decides whether treatment is suitable. Because the visa route for Afghan nationals has changed often, we ask you to confirm the current rules on the official portal. We help with the hospital letter and plans for your stay.

Questions people ask

Is Afghanistan on the Indian e-Visa list?

No. Afghanistan does not appear on the standard e-Visa eligible list. The official portal directs Afghan nationals to a separate Afghan visa module. Apply only through the Government of India website and not through agents claiming to offer e-Visas.

Is my Tazkira really required?

Indian missions describe the passport and Tazkira uploads as mandatory for Afghan applicants. Scan both clearly before you start the online form. Make sure the names match exactly across your passport, Tazkira and the hospital letter.

Can a family member come with me?

News reports from May 2025 said a medical attendant category was available to Afghan nationals. Each attendant applies separately. Their names should appear in the hospital’s letter so that the purpose of the visit is clear.
