Medical travel to India from Australia: e-Medical visa guide

Australians can apply online for India’s e-Medical visa. What to upload, when an emergency entry visa applies and planning care back home.

Australia is on India’s official e-Visa eligible list, so Australian patients can apply online for an e-Medical visa, with up to two companions on e-Medical Attendant visas. Apply at least four days before arrival. The High Commission of India in Canberra also grants emergency entry visas at its discretion, for example when an immediate family member is seriously ill.

Which visa do Australian patients use?

Australian passport holders apply for the e-Medical visa on the official portal, attaching a letter from the Indian hospital on its letterhead with the suggested admission date. Companions apply for e-Medical Attendant visas. The portal allows two per patient.

What does the application need?

  • A passport with six months’ validity at application and two blank pages.
  • A recent front-facing photo on a white background, as a JPEG.
  • A PDF of the passport details page.
  • An application at least four days before arrival, within a 120-day window.

The fee is not refunded and the visa cannot be extended or converted once granted, so agree a realistic plan with the hospital first.

What is an emergency visa from Canberra?

The High Commission of India in Canberra says an emergency visa is not a separate category. It is an entry visa granted at its discretion for genuine emergencies, such as the recent death or serious illness of an immediate family member, with proof such as a medical certificate. Applications in the ACT need a prior appointment by phone and are lodged at the VFS centre or the High Commission.

Not a substitute for planning

An emergency entry visa is discretionary and meant for urgent family situations. A patient planning treatment should apply for the e-Medical visa in good time.

Which language edition suits Australian patients?

IndiaMedica’s English edition is the reference edition and uses British spelling familiar to Australian readers.

Where can Australian e-Visa holders land?

The portal’s designated airports include Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kochi (Cochin). Confirm your arrival airport is listed.

How should care at home be planned?

Share the Indian treatment plan with your GP before you travel. Ask the hospital for a full discharge summary, medicines by generic name and a follow-up schedule. The treating specialist decides when it is safe to fly home.

What practical points matter?

India prohibits narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances without authority, so carry prescriptions and check controlled medicines with the hospital. Declare foreign currency above prescribed limits on arrival.

How does IndiaMedica help Australian patients?

We review records free, collect opinions and estimates from accredited hospitals and help you obtain the admission letter. Partner hospitals pay a disclosed referral fee that never changes your price.
