Which visa do US patients use?
US citizens with ordinary passports apply for the e-Medical visa on the official portal. The Embassy of India in Washington lists tourist, business, medical, medical attendant and conference as e-Visa categories. It describes the e-Visa as in addition to the regular visa services offered by Indian embassies and consulates.
Who cannot use the e-Visa?
- Holders of diplomatic or official passports.
- Holders of a laissez-passer or an international travel document.
- Anyone endorsed on a parent’s or spouse’s passport, since each person needs a separate passport.
- Travellers with a Pakistani passport or of Pakistani origin, who the portal says should apply for a regular visa at an Indian mission.
Avoid look-alike websites
The Washington embassy cautions against websites that appear to represent the Government of India and says no facilitation by an intermediary is required. Apply and pay only on indianvisaonline.gov.in.
What does the application need?
Upload a white-background photograph and a PDF of the passport details page, and attach the Indian hospital’s letter showing the suggested admission date. The passport needs six months’ validity when you apply and two blank pages. Apply at least four days before arrival.
Which US records should a patient collect?
Request your records from each provider through their records office or patient portal. An Indian specialist will usually want recent specialist notes, test results with dates, imaging reports and full image files, pathology reports and a current medicines list.
Which language edition suits US patients?
IndiaMedica’s English edition is the reference edition. It uses British spelling, so you will see ‘haemoglobin’ and ‘programme’.
Where can US e-Visa holders enter India?
The portal lists designated airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. Confirm your landing airport is listed.
What practical points matter?
India prohibits the import of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances without authority. Carry prescriptions and check controlled medicines with the hospital. Declare foreign currency above prescribed limits. Ask your health insurer and travel insurer what they cover for treatment abroad and complications.
How does IndiaMedica help US patients?
We review records free, collect opinions and estimates from accredited hospitals and help you get the admission letter. Partner hospitals pay a disclosed referral fee that never changes your price.
