Rehabilitation (also: Rehab): Rehabilitation is a set of interventions that optimise functioning and reduce disability in people with health conditions, delivered by a team of trained professionals.
Rehabilitation is a set of interventions designed to improve how you function and reduce disability after illness, injury or surgery. The World Health Organization says anybody may need it at some point. It is not a luxury or a last resort. For travelling patients, rehabilitation often begins in hospital in India and must continue at home.
What does rehabilitation include?
WHO gives examples:
- Exercise to improve strength and balance after a stroke.
- Speech and language training after a brain injury.
- Fitting and adjusting a prosthesis after amputation.
- Breathing and recovery support for people who have been in intensive care.
- Home changes that reduce the risk of falls.
Who provides it?
WHO lists physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, audiologists, orthotists and prosthetists, clinical psychologists, rehabilitation physicians and rehabilitation nurses. Surgeons and family doctors also play a role. Care can take place in hospital, in outpatient clinics or at home.
How do you plan rehabilitation around a trip to India?
Ask the hospital which part of rehabilitation happens during your stay and what must continue after you leave. For stroke, spinal or major joint surgery this matters as much as the operation itself. Before you travel, find out which services are available near your home. Ask the Indian team for a written discharge summary and a therapy plan your local team can follow. Your treating specialist decides when it is safe for you to travel.
Ayurvedic programmes
Some centres offer Ayurvedic rehabilitation programmes. These are supportive wellness care and should only be added with your medical team’s agreement.
Questions people ask
Should I stay longer in India for rehabilitation?
That depends on your condition, the services available at home and your specialist’s advice. Some patients complete early rehabilitation in India and continue at home. Others need a longer stay. Discuss both options before you book flights.
Is rehabilitation the same as physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is one part of rehabilitation. WHO describes a wider team that can include occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists and rehabilitation doctors, depending on your needs.
