Ethiopia is not on the current e-Visa eligible list published on India’s official portal, so Ethiopian patients apply for a regular medical visa at the Embassy of India in Addis Ababa. The embassy states that it issues medical visas to Ethiopian nationals. Ethiopia is also on India’s yellow fever list, so carry a valid certificate.

Can Ethiopians apply for the e-Medical visa?
Not at present. When we checked the e-Visa eligible-countries list on the official portal, Ethiopia was not included. A patient should therefore apply for a regular medical visa and each companion for a medical attendant visa. Recheck the portal before you apply, because the list changes from time to time.
Where do Ethiopian patients apply?
The Embassy of India in Addis Ababa says it issues tourist, business, student, medical and other visas to Ethiopian nationals. Its published visa hours are on weekday mornings, excluding holidays. Contact the consular section first to confirm the current submission process and document list.
What should an Ethiopian patient prepare?
Indian missions generally ask medical visa applicants to show genuine need and a confirmed plan. The High Commission of India in London describes the medical visa as one granted where the sole purpose of the visit is treatment, supported by medical records. In practice, prepare:
- A passport with enough validity and blank pages, plus the online visa form printed and signed.
- A referral or medical report from your doctor or hospital in Ethiopia.
- A letter from the Indian hospital confirming the treatment and naming the patient and attendants with passport numbers.
- Recent reports, scans and pathology, with images on a disc or drive.
- Evidence of funds or sponsorship.
- An original yellow fever vaccination certificate.
Yellow fever on arrival
Ethiopia is on the yellow fever endemic list reproduced by India’s Ministry of Health. A traveller without a valid certificate can be quarantined until the certificate becomes valid or for up to six days from last possible exposure.
Which language edition suits Ethiopian families?
IndiaMedica publishes its reference edition in English. Hospital paperwork in India is in English, so plan for an attendant who reads English or ask the hospital whether interpreter support is available.
Which Indian cities are relevant?
PIB’s May 2026 backgrounder lists JCI-accredited hospitals by city as of 2022, with the largest numbers in Delhi and Mumbai followed by Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. Our destination guides cover each of these cities. The hospital chosen for your treatment decides the city.
What practical points matter?
Do not pack narcotic or psychotropic medicines without written medical authority, since Indian customs lists them as prohibited. Carry prescriptions for all regular medicines. Foreign currency above the prescribed limits must be declared on arrival.
How does IndiaMedica help patients from Ethiopia?
We review your reports free, approach accredited hospitals for opinions and estimates and help you obtain an invitation letter that names patient and attendants correctly. Partner hospitals pay a disclosed referral fee that never changes the price you pay.
Questions people ask
Should I wait for Ethiopia to be added to the e-Visa list?
If treatment is needed soon, apply for the regular medical visa now. The e-Visa list is updated from time to time, so check the official portal again before any later trip or follow-up visit.
Can family members travel with an Ethiopian patient?
Yes. Indian missions issue medical attendant visas to family members accompanying a patient, valid for the same period as the patient’s visa. The Indian hospital letter should name each attendant with their passport number.
