Medical attendant: the companion who travels with a patient

What a medical attendant does for an international patient in India, who can be one, how many are allowed on medical visas and how to choose well.

Medical attendant (also: Patient attendant, Caregiver, Escort): A medical attendant is a relative or friend who travels with a patient for treatment in India, supports them during the stay and holds a matching attendant visa.

A medical attendant is the person who travels with a patient and supports them through treatment in India. On the e-Visa route the portal allows up to two e-Medical Attendant visas for each patient. Indian missions say the attendant can be a close relative, family member or friend. Hospitals rely on the attendant for daily help and decisions.

What does an attendant actually do?

  • Stays with or near the patient and helps with meals, mobility and comfort.
  • Joins consultations, takes notes and asks questions.
  • Handles paperwork, payments and pharmacy collections.
  • Keeps family at home informed.
  • Learns the discharge instructions, medicines and wound care with the patient.

Which visa does an attendant need?

With an e-Medical visa, attendants apply for the e-Medical Attendant visa. With a paper medical visa, they apply for a Medical Attendant visa. Indian missions say the attendant visa runs for the same period as the patient’s. For the Ayush visa, attendants hold AY-2 visas and must leave India with the patient.

How do I choose the right attendant?

Choose someone fit to travel who can stay for the whole hospital phase. It helps if they speak a language shared with the hospital or are comfortable working with an interpreter. Ask that the attendant is present when discharge instructions are given, so that two people hear them.

Health of the attendant

Long flights and hospital days are tiring. An attendant with their own health condition should bring enough medicine and copies of prescriptions.

Questions people ask

Can the attendant stay in the hospital room?

Each hospital sets its own rules for attendants on the ward. The NHS notes that intensive care units may limit the number of people at the bedside. Ask the hospital about overnight stays, meals and visiting before you travel.

Can I bring a child as an attendant?

An attendant needs to be able to support the patient and deal with the hospital. A child usually cannot do this. If you must travel with children, plan a separate adult to care for them and check which visa they need.
