Medical travel to India from Ghana: e-Medical or regular visa

Ghanaians can apply for India’s e-Medical visa online or a regular visa in Accra. Documents, the yellow fever certificate and planning notes.

Ghana is on the official e-Visa eligible list, so most Ghanaian patients can apply online for an e-Medical visa. The High Commission of India in Accra also accepts regular visa applications, asking medical applicants for a local doctor’s referral, an Indian hospital confirmation and a bank statement. A yellow fever certificate is needed either way.

Questions people ask

Should a Ghanaian patient choose the e-Visa or the regular visa?

If you hold an ordinary passport, the e-Medical visa avoids a visit to the High Commission. The regular visa suits those not eligible for the e-Visa. Note that the e-Visa cannot be extended, so discuss the likely length of treatment with the hospital first.

Is the yellow fever certificate checked for the visa or at the airport?

Both. The Accra High Commission asks for the original certificate with regular visa applications, and India’s airport health rules require a valid certificate from travellers arriving from listed countries such as Ghana.
