Tanzania is on the official list of countries eligible for India’s e-Visa. A Tanzanian patient can apply online for an e-Medical visa, with up to two companions on e-Medical Attendant visas. The application needs an Indian hospital letter, a clear photograph and a passport scan, and must be made at least four days before arrival.

Which visa do Tanzanian patients use?
Tanzanian nationals can apply for the e-Medical visa through the official Indian portal. The visa is meant for treatment in India. Family members who come to support the patient apply for the e-Medical Attendant visa, limited to two per patient.
If you hold a diplomatic or official passport, or travel on a laissez-passer, the e-Visa is not available to you. Apply for a regular visa through the Indian mission instead.
How should the application be prepared?
- Ask the Indian hospital for a letter on its letterhead that shows your suggested admission date.
- Scan the passport’s personal details page as a PDF and take a photograph on a plain white background.
- Check that the passport has six months’ validity when you apply and two blank pages.
- Apply on the government portal at least four days before you land and no earlier than 120 days ahead.
- Make sure each attendant has their own passport and application.
The portal warns that unclear photographs or scans can lead to rejection and that the fee is not refunded. The e-Visa cannot be extended or converted once you are in India.
Is a yellow fever certificate needed?
Tanzania does not appear on the yellow fever endemic list reproduced by India’s Ministry of Health. If your journey passes through a country that is on the list, check the rule on the Ministry’s page before you travel and carry a certificate if it applies to you.
Which language edition fits Tanzanian patients?
IndiaMedica’s English edition is the reference for all our guidance. Indian hospitals communicate in English, so choose an attendant who is comfortable reading reports and consent forms in English, or ask the hospital about interpreter support.
Where can e-Visa holders enter India?
Only designated airports and seaports accept e-Visa arrivals. The airports on the portal’s list include Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. The portal’s own lists are not fully consistent, so confirm your arrival airport is listed before booking.
What practical points should Tanzanian patients note?
Carry printed reports and imaging on disc or a drive, your e-Visa approval and the hospital letter. Bring enough of your regular medicines with prescriptions. Narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances are prohibited imports, so ask the hospital about any controlled medicine before travel. Declare foreign currency above the prescribed limits at customs.
How does IndiaMedica support patients from Tanzania?
Our free case review gathers opinions and estimates from accredited hospitals, helps you get the admission letter the portal asks for and keeps a case manager in contact before, during and after treatment. Partner hospitals pay a disclosed referral fee that never changes your price.
Questions people ask
How early can a Tanzanian patient apply for the e-Medical visa?
The portal allows applications up to 120 days before arrival and no later than four days before. Applying early leaves time to fix a rejected photograph or scan without moving the hospital admission.
Can an e-Medical visa be extended if treatment takes longer?
The portal states that e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. Ask the hospital for a realistic plan before applying. If treatment runs longer than expected, the hospital’s international patient desk can explain the options available under Indian rules.
